This has been one of my favorite coloring books by far I love the designs. Each page is complex but easy enough to complete in one sitting. I have nearly completed the book and will buy some of the other books in this series. One thing about this book is the paper is really nice with a smooth texture that takes ink really smoothly with full coverage without requiring going over multiple times. The pages are perforated so they can be removed and used as journal pages or framed. I use markers and unfortunately they bleed through the page so the reverse of the page is dotted up with bleed-through but there isn't much help for that. Also, the designs are all different but have similar design elements from page to page so the lack of variety in the details might not appeal to some, Otherwise I love the book myself and highly recommend it. I used a wide variety of pens - sharpies, color pencils and gel pens.
As a non-Christian adult I find this book completely useless."Cool Stuff" is full chapters on Christmas, Easter, crosses and praying hands. It's a large percentage of the book.Then cutesy Halloween and cartoon animals, various banners and other nonsense.Grrrrr!
Originally I purchased this for my daughter who asked for His to draw books for Christmas. Since receiving it and looking through it, it will have to be shared by all 3 of my kids and myself as well. There are so many cool things in this book that even I as a 36 year old mother of 3, would love to learn how to draw. My four year old as well as my 12 year old will also love this. Might possibly be the beginning of a family drawing night.
Written for kids, but can be read and used by anyone. Simplified shapes and lessons make learning how to draw very easy. At first, I was pretty disappointed when I opened it and saw some of the overly-simplified how-to's and the vocabulary lessons, but reading ahead showed me different. It might be meant for student-use but I found some of the lessons to be very interesting. As adults, we over-complicate so much, and this book teaches us that maybe slowing things down and using just the basics can give very surprising results. Definitely can't wait to sit down and unwind with some of the easier techniques tomorrow!
I purchased these books for my 5 year old daughter to learn some drawing techniques. The books are great books for learning how to draw, but I felt that they were geared more towards older children and adults. My daughter had a hard time following along and ultimately got frustrated with the book and put it down. I found that the Ed Emberly books were more geared towards smaller children, so I found those for her.On the other note, I really enjoyed the material in these books and the process in which the author teaches you techniques of drawing line, shading, value, etc. Great learning books for the aspiring artist, but I don't recommend this book for anyone under the age of 10.
I have always wanted to draw. Kids in school made it look so easy when they were bored in class. Now that I'm reaching 50, I can learn technique, shading, perspective, even how to draw city streets and buildings. Ms. Holmes has a very unique way to show you, step by step, how to draw very intricate things! Fancy tea cups, cupcakes, banners, flowers. KIDS: anime boys and girls, all different kinds of skulls, graffiti art, Halloween spooks, a double turn table, lion heads, climbing tigers, and so much more! This is THE book if you want to learn fast. Intermediate or skilled drawers, this book is for people who want to LEARN to draw well. These are not the basic stick figures or amateurish looking things. These are INCREDIBLE works of art. Pick up a pencil and start drawing: EVERYONE. I am too excited to get started with her instructions and to start drawing REAL COOL STUFF!!!!
These are good concrete lessons that I use for my toughest class to keep them focused. It also allows me to deal with behavior because I don't have to give more than a minute of instruction, and they are still learning fun and important art skills. Win, win. However, you cannot print from the online version.
For days I've thought about this book arriving. I don't know what has driven me to learn to draw, but now I find it on my "bucket list". I had hoped for a handful of step by step instructions leading to finished sketches, or at least more filled out doodles. I have NO serious aspirations of making great art. I hoped for a one book introduction, nothing more.This book contains two pages on shading. TWO PAGES! And from that point on in each example the last step is "shading". You are told, "now shade" but not shown in a step by step way how to do this. Very frustrating, every single example leads to unfinished unshaded, flat, lifeless doodles... just like I've been making on the back of the phone book for fifty years.As a quick example, instructions for drawing an egg would be 1) draw an oval 2) shade.Entire books are dedicated to shading. Nothing here about about proper pencil technique, smoothing, nothing. What is left untaught in this volume makes it useless as a one stop how to book. I'm not interested enough to buy a second book, or perhaps a third. This may be an interesting beginners book for children. Just remember it largely misses a singularly important aspect of the art.
