Review

Praise for Einstein’s War  “A thrilling history of the development of the theory of relativity...a superb account of Edison’s and Eddington’s spectacularly successful struggles to work and survive under miserable wartime conditions.”—Kirkus, starred review“Impressive work of popular science...  Well told... delivers a wider, and still relevant, message that how science is performed is inextricable from other aspects of people's lives.”--Publisher's Weekly, starred review“This beautifully written, moving account captures the heady thrills and crushing setbacks of one of the great intellectual adventures of modern times.” —David Kaiser, MIT, author of How the Hippies Saved Physics   “Profoundly absorbing… One of the greatest epics of scientific history—the grueling intellectual labor of Albert Einstein in Berlin, on one side of the dividing line that the First World War had drawn across Europe… and, on the other side of it, the efforts of Arthur Eddington in Cambridge, one of Einstein’s few supporters...  It was Eddington’s achievement that at last established Einstein’s for the world at large; and all this… amidst the intellectual indifference and near-universal xenophobia of their fellow-scientists on both sides.   An amazing story.” —Michael Frayn, author of the Tony Award winning play Copenhagen   “Einstein, at 35, was living and working in the heart of Berlin when the guns of World War I began firing.  The bloody, seemingly endless conflict provoked everything he detested: violence, nationalism, and the herd-thinking that drove individuals into nothing.  Matt Stanley gives us the scientist-philosopher and activist during these bloody years, tacking back and forth so effectively between the development of general relativity, plans to test it, and the lopsided battle Einstein fought with the majority of German intellectuals who lined up happily behind the battle lines.  A great read about Einstein and the War that Made More Wars.” —Peter Galison, Harvard University, author of Einstein's Clocks, Poincare's Maps   “Even if you know a lot about the history of relativity -- even if you know the old stories about Sir Arthur Eddington's voyage in 1919 to try to prove Albert Einstein's theories correct -- you probably haven't pondered just how unlikely the Einstein/Eddington pairing really was. At a time where the mere hint of fraternization with the enemy could land you in jail as a spy, a Briton embraced the ideas of an enemy scientist, and helped launch the legend of arguably the greatest physicist of modern times. A fascinating story.” —Charles Seife, author of Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea   “How an obscure German physicist became the first superstar of science… Stanley lets us share that excitement a hundred years later in this entertaining and gripping book. It’s a must read if you ever wondered how Einstein became ‘Einstein’.” —Manjit Kumar, author of Quantum   “A thrilling history of the development of the theory of relativity… delivers a superb account of Einstein’s and Eddington's spectacularly successful struggles to work and survive under miserable wartime conditions.”  —Kirkus (Starred review)

#136,064 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Arrived on time and looks good, but, I am confused. My book arrived, after I paid full price, with a sticker on it for $7.

This is probably the most thorough Firearm mag/or book I have ever owned. As a gun newbie this is like a mini disneyland, lol. My only concern is like the previous reviewer why is the a 7 dollar sticker and I end up paying almost $25.00

Not as many guns in the book as I thought there would be. Confused by the $7 sticker on the book. Was it supposed to be that price?

The book is what I expected it to be.

While this is a great resource (which is the reason for the 5 stars), it's more than a little frustrating to receive a book, that I paid over $25 for, with a giant "$7" sticker on it. At least have the decency to take it off before you charge near four times that amount.

Lots of information for the collector.

I purchase this for my dad every year and he loves it.

The item arrived was the correct item and arrived within the time frame as estimated. In addition, to no damages to the item.

Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague, by Roger Tory Peterson

Amazon.com Review

In 1953 renowned American ornithologist and painter Roger Tory Peterson and British seabird specialist James Fisher undertook a whirlwind, 100-day tour of America's great wildlife refuges and corridors. This wonderful book recounts that sometimes madcap voyage, which took them to familiar places such as Long Island and the Smoky Mountains, but also to less traveled venues such as Big Bend and the then-remote Everglades. Along the way the authors document such things as the courting behavior of dragonflies and the arrival of the first cattle egrets in North America. This is a classic of nature writing and a great pleasure to read.

If I were to pick the top five books that have influenced my life...for the better, this one would probably be at the top of that list of five. I first read it as a relatively young man and have given it several rereads over the years and just finished my latest.I like books pertaining to natural history, history and travel books. It this single volume I get all three of my reading loves dished out in a grand manner. This book has been around for over 50 years now and in many ways it is a fresh today as it was the day it was published. Now this is not to say that it can be used as a "current" travel guide - alas, far from it. The geography of North America has changes somewhat over the years. New roads, strip malls, dried up rivers and creeks, urban sprawl, pollution, new roads, logging, and on and on and on...all have taken their toll. The America Peterson and Fisher observed and recorded is in many ways not with us any longer. I suppose I am fortunate in a way (or unfortunate - depending upon how you look at it) to have had the opportunity to travel though and visit many of the places this duo visited both then and more recently. I am acutely aware of the changes. And this is one of the strong features of this work. It records a country in a state which we will, if we want to be realistic about it, never see again. It records our history and thereby will give the thoughtful reader much to ponder both as to our current situation and that of the future. The premise of this work is well known. Two of the world's greatest naturalists drive from the extreme North East section of N. America and roughly follow the coast line all the way around via automobile with a side trip to Mexico and of course Alaska. They observed and record. They of course pat particular attention to birds of other wildlife and plants are not ignored nor are the geographical oddities of this vast land. The book is well written and both med and contributed - the get the American "take" as well as the European (English). I love the way the book is designed and formatted...very, very readable! You need not be a birder to enjoy and appreciate this one. It is a chronicle of our land at a specific time. I wish there were more book like it written by naturalist of this caliber.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

I just love this book. Reading it always inspires my wanderlust for nature, and it has done more to shape my vacation mentality (see nature, not just human stuff) than most anything else. This is the ultimate road trip book, with two top naturalists, who are also keen birders traveling North America seeing as much as they can. It's not just birds; mammals, reptiles, ecology, insects, and geography all spill off the pages in a readable fashion, along with funny moments (rolling downhill in neutral when the gas gauge reads empty, only to find out the gauge is broken and they had half a tank!) and a true friendship. It also shows how much the continent has changed since, and not for the better, at least in terms of the environment.

Very fun read about nature, birds and the USA set in the 1950s. Interesting to read and get a sense for how much/what has changed in almost 70 years. They are great observers of nature and fun to travel along with.

Keep your birding app handy when you retrace the the 1953 journey taken by these two scientists in search of the bird life along the Eastern coast, the Panhandle of Florida, the great deserts, even to the Pacific of the Alaskan islands. Peterson also describes the plant life and animals of these regions with an Audubon eye for detail and differentiation. When I was in the Great Smokies recently, I tried to follow their hike up the Ramsey Cascade to see the largest trees in the park. Even after so many decades, the memoirs have much to offer those who love to travel the conservationist's journey through the American landscape. It will always be on my bookshelf.

Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher wrote a very enjoyable book about their birding across America. And Scott Weidensaul's book "Return to Wild America: A Yearlong Search for the Continent's Natural Soul," published in 2005, was an excellent update on birding along a similar path across America.I highly recommend both books for those who are into birds and/or who like traveling to all sorts of interesting places in North America.

A wonderful book!

I recommend Wild America to each and every one of us who loves Nature and the outdoors. To those of us who are concerned about the ongoing struggle to preserve undeveloped America. Peterson & Fisher got it in 1953. Thankfully, a majority of us get it. A difficult book to put down…as these 2 wonderful guides travel through the East, South, Gulf, West, Westcoast, Mexico, Northwest, and Canada+.I loved it.

as always the paintings are wonderful. Too bad, in the calendar are all pages missing from March 04 until June 17. 2019. This makes it a useless item.
