Can’t say enough about how thankful my family is for this incredible and insightful journal. Over the final three years of my dad’s life, I would come over and “interview” him with me writing down what he said. Dad wasn’t a writer at all. I’d sit down with Dad and read the two options. He could either pick one, both, or pass. Not only did I learn so much about his life, my mom was often surprised as well saying, “I didn’t know that about you dear!” Through those interview sessions, we learned so much that at dad’s wake, the Open journal was placed where the long line of friends could page through. My siblings each took the journal for a few weeks and reported back how the stories touched their hearts and made them roar with laughter. My dad and I got through about 75% of The journal before he passed. We pull out that journal from time to time. It’s now 17 years since dad’s been gone, and my mom just mentioned, “When’s my turn for the journal?”We are so grateful for “To Our Children’s Children” and have strongly recommended this resource to our friends and family!

My mom is 89. She's in good health, but her memory is getting spotty. From discussions with my nieces and nephews, I'm well aware of how many "family stories" already have been lost. So on a recent visit to Mom, I packed along my Flip Video and a copy of this book. I was almost reluctant to suggest we do an Oral History, but to my great surprise we used up the storage on the video camera that first night -- and she wanted to keep going.I give most of the credit to this book. It's meant to be a sort-of-diary for an individual to fill out. At the top of every page is a set of questions, and the rest of the page is blank, so you can write out the answer. Rather than write in Mom's answers, I used them as queries as I videotaped her; now, thanks to iMovie, I'll turn it into a DVD that I can share with the rest of my family.What makes these questions so good is that they elicit sensory memories. For example, rather than asking, "Tell me about your grandparents," the book asks, "Did your grandparents have a food smell that you associated with visiting them?" My mom said no... but then she proceeded to tell me more about where and how they lived than I ever knew. A question about the view from her childhood window led to a long explanation of why her parents bought everything a teenager might want (Mom had a ping pong table and a pool table?) -- this way, she said, other kids came to THEIR house, so her folks never worried about where THEIR children were. I've known my mom for 51 years, and in an hour she told me at least four stories I hadn't heard before.Not every question grabbed her, of course -- but enough did that I quickly decided the book was absolutely worth the money. I would never have thought to ask her most of these questions. (Even though I'm a writer for a living, and I interview people professionally every day!)Don't wait until your relative is 89. After doing this exercise with my Mom, I'm very tempted to send copies of this book to my sisters and my brother. How many of their own stories have they forgotten, or never taken the time to share with children and grandchildren? I also recommend using this as a starting point for a video; Mom said that writing it out herself wouldn't have happened (I suspect it'd seem like a homework assignment, the sort you put off) but when I asked... well, that was something else entirely.

I'd recommend this to anyone who is working on their own family heritage to pass on to their children. KaitannP.S. I've been working on my own family history and also, as a high school teacher had assigned such projects to my classes. Many people shy away from such exploration because of single parenting, adoption and other exception making situations but it is thrilling when you get to the point where you can also find out the good and not so good aspects of your heritage. I believe everyone can be enriched by finding out "who they are". I have a nephew who has now traced our family history on one side back to Charlemagne and I've had the pleasure of finding all the houses in my home town that various members of the family lived in since the time of the Civil War. What fun that was to take pictures of them all. The more we find out about ourselves the more we can realize we're all children who began life in the same way.....somewhere.

This is really perfect for any relative, not just grandparents! I was looking for something to give to my grandparents to fill out for my daughter (her great-grandparents), but I was having a hard time finding something that wasn't specifically for parents or grandparents. This is great! There are thought-provoking questions at the top of each page that are great at bringing back memories that might not have been recorded in a family history, otherwise. There is plenty of room to write and this is a nice hard-back book that I think makes a really nice gift! I am thinking of buying a couple more for my parents and maybe even myself.

I've looked at and used several books of this type, and decided on this one for our grandson who is about to be born. It is more detailed than other "Grandpa/Grandma" books, and also doesn't waste pages with family photos. I guess our grandson will not store his pictures in books!My daughter-in-love told her mother about it, and she is purchasing a copy also, so our grandson will know about both sides of his family.The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is not spiral bound, which makes it a bit trickier to use.

I purchased this for my in-laws and they were thrilled. This is a high-quality, hardback book with plenty of room to write. I looked at over 20 different family journals that ask questions and this one is 200% better than all of them. The questions are wonderful and prompt so many memories and again, the space to write is adequate to fill with those memories.I recommend this to anyone who would like to record the most precious parts of our family members--their memories of life. It was a well written book. I learned a lot. However, the focus was just not exactly what I was looking for. I guess I was looking for something more about the Byzantine/Ottoman Empires than just Istanbul. (I know; the title "Istanbul" should have been a clue).I did enjoy the book. enough so, that I'm thinking of ordering one of his other books on the Middle East

Lewis is the most erudite middle east scholar.

He is one of the leading western experts on Ottoman Empire. The book is organized and written beautifully. I believe anyone who wants to have a serious opinion of Ottomans HAS TO read this book.

He wrote on Turkey for nearly half a century. He also wrote on Middle-East as well but his real expertise is Turkey I believe. in every book of his he zooms into a subject (Turkey) and tells the story like in his other books with more detail. So if you already read one of his books on Turkey or Ottomans you dont need to read this one.

WOW, the images, the objects, the descriptions, the stories! This Book has it all. One of my nes favorites in my collection.

Beautiful book with nice photos and all details

A fantastic read about the jewelled boxes and objects amassed by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan and his wife Princess Catherine. With over 100 boxes in the collection, the book begins with a personal note from Princess Catherine that tells the story of how the collection began with one box as a Christmas gift from her husband and over the years has become a symbol of their love and happiness. The book then follows with an introduction by Pierre Rainero, proceeding with chapters exploring the influences from the Far East on jewelry design during the Art Deco movement, the history of smoking and the need for cigarette and vanity cases for the new modern woman, and the background of manufacturing and designing these objects including several clocks and watches.Most impressive is the photography of all the jeweled objects with illustrations and original design drawings, truly captivating turning each page. What I particularly love is the full detailed descriptions and catalogue notes on each piece which encourages you to examine every item and understand the immense skill and great design needed to produce such fantastic jewels objects. Looking forward to seeing this collection at the exhibit that accompanies this book at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City.

What a spectacular book. The extraordinary exhibit for which the book was created opened just a few months ago in Manhattan, and of course I rushed in to see it. To be able to see so many legendary boxes, cigarette cases, clocks, minaudieres, in one place - after having seen them only in jewelry books - was unspeakably pleasurable. The book itself is also a treasure, on many levels. First, the photography is wonderful, with high resolution and large images, all the better to see and enjoy the details. The accompanying text, written by three well known and highly respected curators and historians, adds valuable historical and technical information that further augments the reader's knowledge. Additional text offered by Sarah Davis and Pierre Raniero only serve to deepen the reader's fascination with the Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan,both as a loving couple and as avid collectors well positioned to acquire fine objects. It would be unthinkable for any lover of fine signed jewelry or objects to not include this book in his/her collection. Run - don't walk - to purchase it and enjoy the contents.

This book is becoming a favorite, though I missed the exhibit earlier this year and have no background in jewelry. I don’t even wear jewelry! But my eye lingers over the gorgeous colors and I flip slowly through the pages choosing my favorites - I’m quickly converting to a jewelry lover. And I’d like to examine that luscious blue and green cigarette case on page 115, please. You can wrap it up and send it to my address. Or the scale pattern box with the turquoise and lapis inserts on page 194.Besides the lovely sparkle, I must say how much I enjoyed the story of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan and his wife Catherine and their enjoyment of the pieces. The family photographs included, the introduction by Pierre Rainero, and the afterword by Sarah Davis made the couple seem real and approachable.

This box set has given me hours and hours of enjoyment. I read a lot of this author's books and only came across 2 actual books comprising one set, that I had already read. Not that that mattered, I enjoyed reading them again. This author has a wonderful imagination, not one of these series or books were anything like the others, they all had their own fresh storylines and the box set is so worthwhile. I was given this set as an ARC and as I intend to read it again, I bought it to put on my TBR kindle. This is a very highly recommended box set, you will get hours and hours of enjoyment from it.

I enjoyed some stories more than others, but overall an entertaining collection of western love stories. There are several series included within the collection and I appreciated being able to read through each set as a whole.

I liked the plots. Down to earth stories are what I enjoy.

Loaded with sweet stories of sweet love ...brides going into the west to find their forever love..I highly recommend any book these authors write!

So many books. All of them were short enough to sit down and lose yourself in them. Very well written.

Great boxed set of western bride stories and romance.

They are all good books. Definitely repetitive, predictable. But a good read to pass the time. And definitely engrossing .

The stories in this collection are romantically sweet and the characters are likable. The reason I did not give it a five stars was a language issue. First, and foremost I did not see any reason to use cursing or crudeness in the language; the stories could be told quite well without that. Second, I thought some of the language just did not fit the era in which the stories took place; there were expressions that are from our modern vocabulary that I do not think were used in the 19th century. For me, both of these language issues distracted from the stories. If I could have looked past these things I would have enjoyed the stories more.
