It’s a pretty good book, nice pictures interspaced with personal anecdotes, stories about builders, and build directions. Fair warning: Shane loves the crude, low fidelity end of homemade instruments. So you won’t find useful build info on better quality instruments here, nothing on truss rods or dimensions on six string versions. For that matter, there’s not a wealth of dimensional info for anything; Shane likes the more rough and tumble, anything goes method. If this describes you, then this is your book. If this isn’t you, but you’re still interested in cigar box guitars, you’ll still enjoy reading the book, it just won’t be very useful. You’ll probably see something that you’ll be interested in building or playing anyway.

Outstanding! If you have any interest at all in cigar box guitars, either as a player, a builder, or a fan, this is the book to get. We’ll written, entertaining, fun to read, and the photos are beautiful. Just order it!

Great book, not only for the instructions, but it's also just a fun book to look through. The instructions are well detailed and in difficulty. There's even one (The Portland Cowboy guitar) that be built easily by the power tool deprived amongst us.

I have planned a journey to Gettysburg for years, and when I finally do make it to that historical location, I have added one additional stop – Speal’s Tavern, in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania.Speal’s Tavern is owned by author Shane Speal’s father, and along with a serving of beer, one can also visit the museum display of cigar box guitars, with builders from all around the world contributing. After reading Mr. Speal’s book, it would be fun to see the handiwork of other creators.I had envisioned a book of a down-and-dirty collection of hand-made guitars, a combination of Appalachian style instruments made from whatever materials were at hand. The author’s book was far more interesting than anything I could have imagined. Although Mr. Speal entertains us with quirky stories from his personal history, the meat and potatoes are the pictures and descriptions of the guitars and other items.The descriptions don’t stop with the physical details of the instruments. This is a how-to, get-your-hands-involved book, and includes lists of materials and tools needed along with step-by-step instructions on crafting a guitar of your very own. Be ready to be instructed, amused, and wowed, as the author moves from cigar boxes to wine containers to using the old metal ham containers! Readers are encouraged to get involved, and let your imagination take you to new ideas. There are plenty of color pictures, and most people will have the necessary tools already at hand.The book moves on to other creations, teaching us how to build a washtub bass, foot stompers, lap steel guitars, and other interesting variations (gotta mention the beer can microphone). If your buddies are playing their instruments too loud, never fear, as there are instructions how to build homemade pre-amps as well as adding pick-ups to all your new instruments.Whether or not this book turns you into a fan or a DIY cigar box guitar-building fanatic, it’s a fun and entertaining read written by someone who enjoys what he is doing.  This is a wonderful companion art book for the movie. In some ways, I like it better than the ones from LOTR.The cover is beautifully embossed with texture and shine. It's 208-pages and big. Behind the cover is Thorin's Map that you can tear out from the perforated edges, and at the back is a long gatefold of Bilbo's Burglar contract should you want to read the fine prints to see what Bilbo has gotten himself into.There's a generous amount of concept art included that feature the characters, props and environment. Yes, it's all fantasy art, and they are all very beautiful and detailed. There are art from Alan Lee, John Howe, Dan Hennah (production designer), Richard Taylor and many others from Weta Workshop. The book is all art and there aren't a lot of photos, so you won't find behind the scenes shots and there are only small thumbnails of the actors in makeup.The majority are mostly character designs and the related, such as costumes, weapons and other props. There are Bilbo and his entourage of dwarves, trolls, goblins, and creatures. Each character has many designs variations shown, but mostly from the hair and facial hair -- probably more hairstyles that you can find in a hair saloon brochure.The environment art are mainly of close ups of locations and interiors. There are a few of those wide shots as well but could have been printed bigger. Many of the nice textured pencil drawings are from John Howe and Alan Lee.Those who like production design will enjoy the insightful commentary. There's lots to read and often, there will be a few designers talking about just one character, about the design, clothing and their weapons. The extra information gives more depth to the characters.The back cover mention something about this book being the first in a series of hardcover books. So unless they are referring to the other film companions, it means there would be art books for the next two films as well.It's a fantastic artbook. This book covers everything from Bag end all the way to The Carrock from the story. It goes over characters such as Bilbo, Thorin, and others and shows detailed pictures of them in their outfits along with the gear they would have had on them. This book also covers various scenes such as Bilbos birthday party, the goblin kings throne room from when they all get captured in the mountain, and others. The pictures are all highly detailed and look amazing.The book shows you the inside of places like Rivendell, Bag End, and other locations. You get to see what elves would look like such as the Rivendell guards, Elrond, and even their musical instruments. There are cooking supplies, saddles, wagons, sling shots, weapons, armor, and just loads of other stuff I never even thought would be in this book.The goblin section really shows off the goblins perfectly. The pictures of them are really quite gross to look at. Near the end of the book you get to see some good Gollum art and even his little boat which was really cool.Also at the beginning of the book is a pullout of Thorins map and at the end of the book there is a contract of Bilbos Burglar Contract.The book shows you pretty much everything you could want to see from the beginning of the Hobbit and I am very happy with this book.

Another fantastic book of designs, drawings and photos of the work Weta did for The Hobbit movies. This is the first book in a series put together by head designer David Falconer of Weta.If you are a fan of the movies like me and love to read and see photos, drawings and concepts on how a movie was envisioned and put together by prop makers, costumers and the director, these books are right up your alley. This one has so many drawings and shows different conceptions of each of the dwarves, costumes and fighting equipment. The first 90 plus pages are all about the dwarves. The subsequent pages show details in the design of costumes and armory from Bilbo Baggins, the elves, the Goblin King and the trolls.The front of the book has a fold out of Thorin’s map, and a fold out of Biblo’s contact in the back as added bonuses.I love the addition of the notes of the designers on how and why different design were chosen. It’s nice to see inside the heads of all of these talented people.The only thing I do miss from this book are the thoughts and input from the actors about the process, what they thought about what was finally chosen and if they had any say so in their characters. This was included in the final book about the last movie and I greatly enjoyed reading about their thoughts and input. Still this is a fantastic book and if you love to look at designs and how costumers and prop designers work this book is for you.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my brother, who has been a Lord of the Rings fan since the books were first published. I didn't get a chance to read all of the book - didn't want it to look used when he got it! But, at the same time, I wanted to see what it was like. It is beautifully illustrated,and the book itself is very high quality. the covers are think and textured, and it is a nice size. I read the introduction, and some of the text. I want to buy the book for myself eventually. This is a book describing, with words and illustrations, the many details that went into the making of the movie "The Hobit:An Unexpected Journey". It is fascinating to learn to what extreme lengths Peter Jackson and his crew went to make the ultimate film resemble his vision. Anyone interested in the making of a film of this scope and precision would be bound to love this volume.

I found this to be a concise explanation of the Kabbalah and the Tree of Life. It is a good place to start if you want to get the overview. It answered many questions I had and it is a good introduction to further study. (One can study it all one's life and find more and more meaning) I would recommend it to anyone that wants to know about Kabbalah and the Tree of Life. I had read it at a friend's house and decided I wanted the book in my library to re-read (which I did when I received it)

This is a book I use all the time but my original copy disappeared. It is a terrific basic book with easy to follow information.

Kim Zetter details the estoreric teachings of the Cabala in simple, yet detailed writings. This book is great for the beginner or for anyone looking for some info on the teachings of Cabala because it is very thought-out and informative. I first became interested in Cabala a few years ago. I was riding on a train and started talking to a lady sitting next to me who told me about these wonderful teachings. Unfortunately for me, and for people like me, there weren't many resources besides this book. I have seen and read other books but they were rather complicated and difficult to understand. This book taught me many things. One of the main messages I learned is that no book holds the key to happiness. I do not believe Cabala is a secret answer or cure for anything. Rather it will enhance your life if you invite it in.

A delightful read with clarity that belies its size and page count, Simple Kabbalah is just that. An easy to understand, insightful and educational book on a very intricate and complicated subject. Detailed yet comprehensible, most every aspect of this mystical art is touch upon and illuminated. Though reading this book will not make anyone an expert on Jewish Mysticism, it conclusively dispels many of the misconceptions about Kabbalah and give an excellent historical account of its inceptions and beginnings as well as its current place and posture in today�s world. All objectively and readily. Very well written in concise chapters with excellent illustrations, this is a great place to begin a journey into Kabbalah or to refresh your knowledge of this mystical art. You don�t have to be Jewish and you don�t have to be a scholar to enjoy and learn from this charming little book.

This is probably the best introduction to Kabbalah available. The author introduces Kabbalah through an interesting overview of its history and then delves into the main ideas. Two of these chapters are exceptional because the ideas they address are usually not included in other introductory books: the chapter about God and the introduction to Genesis according to Kabbalah. The final chapters analyze the Tree of Life, always pointing how this knowledge can be utilized for our own growth.Although I've only finished the book last week, I know I'll read it again soon.

I am very interested in learning Kabbalah, and this book got me hooked! It is very easy to understand, seems to hit all the major facts and concepts and is wonderfully written. It is like a textbook of Kabbalah 101 for me, I am highlighting things and writing in the margins, but I will never sell it back! :) It is a great reference book that I am sure I will go back to again and again and read many times over, no matter how far I get in my studies of Kabbalah. If you are on the fence, BUY IT!! You won't be sorry.One thing I also like about the book, it states traditional Kabbalah belief, not radical or cult-ish belief as in some other books.
