My two young boys loved this book! Whether you are of Indian descent or not, this was a fantastic read that had the added twist of engaging my five year old in addition and subtraction. The illustrations are fantastic and the story is quite engaging. After we read the book, I commented that I needed to ask my mother in law how to make gulab jamuns. My five year old piped up, "or you could just use the recipe in the book. " :-)

We received our copy last night and have read it 5-6 times already !! My 3.5 year old absolutely loved it ! The illustrations were simply delightful. The simplicity of language helped introduce new diverse details on the Indian culture to her in a manner that she easily understood, enjoyed and embraced. We highly recommend this book to anyone looking to inject some diverse reading into their kids bookshelves !

I got this book as a holiday gift for my son and my nieces (three kids ages 2, 2.5, and 3). They loved it!The illustrations are adorable. The kids loved counting all the items (the gulab jamuns in the bowl, the samosas on the plate, and so on). The story is cute and works very well when reading aloud.I love seeing diverse books, especially about Indian-American kids. This book explains what gulab jamuns are and even includes a recipe to make at home!

What a great book! I read this with my 7 year old daughter and 9 year old son, and we all really enjoyed it, despite the fact that it is recommended for younger audiences. It falls in the counting book category, I suppose, but it is really more than that. The story is charming and Idu and Adu are very endearing, despite their mischief. Both kids could relate to them. We all loved the illustrations and the story was solid. It gave us a little peek into Indian culture. My 9 year-old son was super excited to see a 'free' recipe for gulab jamuns at the end of the book. My youngest like the younger brother the best. The only thing that could have made this book better was the pronunciation of 'gulab jamuns'. I'm sure I was killing it while reading aloud, probably sounding like I had a mouthful of peanut butter. Regardless, this book is just plain fun and worthy of multiple readings.Highly recommended!

I first came across Sandhya Acharya’s books, when she approached me to review her debut – Big Red Fire Truck, which by the way was a huge hit with my son. He loved the characters Idu & Adu (who are inspired by the authors two sons), and the story that revolved around learning through interactive play. Plus, the book is titled Big Red Firetruck, if you are a 4 year old, what’s not to love? However, that book was only available as an e-book, which was a bummer, because my son kept asking me for the Big Red Firetruck book, and used to be pretty upset whenever I tried to get to it on my Kindle.Anyway, he got over it eventually. But I am pretty sure that Idu & Adu did leave their mark on him, because last week when I took 10 Gulab Jamuns to read to him, and mentioned that it was starring Idu & Adu, he was really really excited.Plus since this was a physical copy of the book, he kept flipping through the pages over and over again (mostly due to the wonderful illustrations, I am sure), even before I could actually read the story to him.And speaking of the story, he loved it, it was a very cute and adorable tale of Idu & Adu discovering the yummy Gulab Jamuns, while also being a super fun counting lesson – two things my son really enjoys – gulab jamuns & counting. So, as far as he is concerned, this could have been tailor made for him.The only way this experience could have been better was if I had a magic wand that would help me turn those Gulab Jamuns on paper into the real deal, so that me and my son could gorge on them. But well in the absence of a wand, or any kind of magical powers really, the author has ensured we get the next best thing – the recipe! Yes, there is a special (and I am sure very delicious) recipe of Gulab Jamuns at the back of the book.-Shantala at Shanaya Tales Dot ComDisclaimer: I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review, but the opinions, as always, are completely mine.

I'm inclined to love books about food. Learning about a food new to me is especially welcome. In 10 Gulab Jamuns, Mamma is preparing fantastic sounding sweet treats for their guests. The illustrations are bright, cheerful, and show the mischievous children at work. The Gulab Jamuns are sweet, but so are the interactions between the family members. The inclusion of a recipe for gulab jamuns makes the book even more fun. I look forward to trying out the recipe in the future. Readers and their families will likely be inspired to make Gulab Jamuns after reading this cute story of family and food that is universal while also highlighting Indian culture.Recomendation: This is a nice addition to any picture book collection especially for those looking for representation from India or books focusing on food.

I'm rating this book 5 stars based on the sheer delight it inspires in my daughter. The lobby of her preschool has a copy. Every day for the past couple weeks, she insists on stopping by the lobby so I can read to her, and she always picks 10 Gulab Jamuns! She practically has it memorized. She seems to especially love the part where the children climb onto the chair, then the table, and stuff their faces with the desserts. The book sneaks in some math as the family counts the the disappearing gulab jamuns. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but my daughter has been really interested in subtraction recently. So I definitely recommend this book to: families who love to eat gulab jamuns, families who want to learn about gulab jamuns (then eat them!), and slightly naughty children who think it's funny to steal donuts. Her enthusiasm forced my hand: I have now bought a copy.
