This redbook gives a thorough overview of the software products required to build an entire Websphere based web solution. This includes Websphere App Server, Websphere Studio, Visual Age for Java, DB2, and SecureWay. It gives numerous detailed examples taking you through servlets, JSPs, and interactive web sites. Towards the end it introduces the Patterns Development Kit. (This topic is covered in detail in redbook SG24-5864-00.) This gives sample architecture and a strategy for selecting the one for a given application given its needs. It provides a good sized application with full source code and explanation showing you a best practices for building sites in this environment. The only drawback is that it could use an update for today's more recent versions of the software. Despite that, the installation instructions and sample code are easy to install and follow. It's a permanent part of my library.

As a recomended ressource for gaining the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) Standard Edition certification at IBM, this book is ok. Allthough one might expect IBM to upgrade it very soon to the latest editions of their software, it is still usefull as it covers the way Visual Age and WebSphere Studio is brought to play with WebSphere Application Server. Don't expect miracles though
