Adventures in Dietland is definitely not your typical diet book. It’s not full of recipes and lists of foods that you should avoid. Instead, it’s the cold hard truth about the mental games you need to play with (or against) yourself in order to power through making a permanent healthy life change. This might sound twisted, but the author’s detailed confession of hitting rock bottom made me feel better about my situation because my life has never been that bad. More importantly, it gave me hope that if he can do this, then I can make the changes that I need to make with my eating patterns. This book is an easy conversational read that'll knock some common sense and better habits into your head.

During his 30s, Ralph Peterson experienced an epiphany.He calls it the "day I woke up fat," but really it's the day he hit bottom.And when Peterson did that, he didn't do it halfway. It was like falling out of a redwood tree, hitting every ugly branch on the way to the ground, then falling down a stairway into a swimming pool and nearly drowning. And that last part, falling down the stairs and being rescued from the pool, really happened on a vacation in the Bahamas.Peterson had security issues — he acknowledges being that loudmouth at every party who thrust himself into every conversation, wanted or not — he smoked, he had a drinking problem and perhaps most of all, he ate "like an a*******." He weighed somewhere north of 350 lbs., hated his life and himself and decided to do something about all of it. Ralph Peterson has written an honest, laugh out loud, tell it like it is account of losing 150 pounds and keeping them off. His easy to read memoir gives dieters excellent advice that feels as if you were hearing it from a good friend. I especially liked his “50 Rules Everyone Needs to Know to Win at the Game of Dieting.” Three rules that made great sense to me were #3 Start on a Friday (so you can’t take weekends off); # 4 Choose a Plan that most resembles your current habits, and #7 Track Your Food – write down what you’re eating. Best of all, this book gives dieters hope that if 350-pound guy with lots of bad habits can succeed, so can you.

This is a great book not just because I know the author. Wait a minute. It is a great book BECAUSE I know the author. I have seen first hand Ralph's transformation from his 350 pounds to a lean, healthy self. If you're like me, you've read multiple weight loss books, articles, etc...and tried all the fad diets. When you read this book, Ralph delivers a reasonable (and entertaining) approach to healthy living that guides you to that weight reduction we all want. You will enjoy this book!

Absolutely fantastic read. I am biased for I have known the Author since we were kids. I never realized that Ralph had gone through so much in his life towards the end that he needed to make the changes that he did. I too have gone through almost a mirror story and can relate to Ralphs story on every level imaginable! This book is a fast, easy, and well written memoir. I found humor, sorrow, guilt, and compassion within. I recommend that You read this book if for no other reason than the pleasurable way Ralph tells his story! If you are struggling with your weight, self respect, or confidence then yes this is a must read! Hope you take the time and enjoy it as much as I did! Having done the diet yo-yoing myself this book is fantastic. I could totally relate to the whole thing having lost 150+ lbs myself by changing my lifestyle. Reading this book the challenges, obstacles and mind games that go with it all for me was nice hearing that someone else experienced it too that I wasn’t the only one that all those crazy things ran threw my head. If I had not lost my weight before reading this it surly would help to get one on the right path to making that lifestyle change and succeed at it. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to take that first step in making that change in their life to better their health you won’t be sorry you did.

This book has SO much information, tips, tidbits, and having Ralph share his journey makes you feel less alone and overwhelmed. I laughed (a lot) and even cried a little but mostly I appreciated his candor in writing his very personal journey. It was truly amazing!!

Who would have ever thought a diet book would be so much fun? I can't wait to implement the strategies for dropping my next 20 pounds thanks to Ralph Peterson's advice in this book. Bravo!
