Review

Simon brings his deft touch to an explanation of the brain and the nervous system. His clear, concise writing style is complemented by stunning colorimages taken with radiological scanners, such as CAT scans, MRIs, and SEMs (scanning electron microscopes.) Included in his explanation are descriptions of the anatomy andfunction of the parts of the brain, long and short term memory, neurons, dentrites, and more. The layout is familiar--a page of text facing a full-page photo. There is no glossary orindex, but, as usual, the book is so well organized that they won't be missed.-- "School Library Journal," 8/97"The variety of views and the lucid presentation provide an absorbing introduction to this amazing control system that can do more jobs than the most powerful computer ever made."-- "Horn Book ," September/October, 1997 "Full-color photographs, computer simulations, drawings, and three-dimensional models are used to grand effect to clarify, explain, and celebrate the remarkably complex system ofbrain and nerves.... visually striking... the picture book format works perfectly to complement text with illustrations, but by no means indicates simplicity."--" Kirkus Reviews," 7/1/97

Really good book to learn about the brain and human neurology. Although, I noticed that the printed illustrations in the paper back (which I just bought) are not as vibrant or detailed (reduced pixel quality) as the hardback version that I owned some years back. Still, this is a wonderful book on the brain. Happy reading~*

Its a kids book, but not a fairy tale. I think that with this Smithsonian series there will be technical terms a child, and even unfamiliar adults, will be stopped by. At the same time, with repeated exposure to such terms, I feel the child can get it. My daughter has this set and when I bought it we understood there would be a new learning curve for her, this is exactly why we bought it. Introducing topics in neuroscience will challenge most readers without a background within, especially a child developing litaracy skills - but I think its worth the effort. To support this goal I felt the images were excellent and make revisiting the pages easy.If you are keen on fostering a sense of curiosity and a scientific mind within a child, the decision is a no-brainer, buy them. And for keen adults - fun to look at as we attempt to help our children grow.

These are very informational and perfect for kids. My 9 year old absolutely loves them! Some of the medical books (heart, bones, brain) are a bit out of reach for my 4 year old and 6 year old, but they still listen and love looking at the pictures. Great, great, great books!

Graphics are awesome. Students argue over who gets the book. Some even hide it. Need to buy another.:)

informative-interesting

It was a gift to my son who loved it!

I had Brain Cancer 5 years ago and wanted to study every book related to the disease prior to dealing with doctor's.

You can google print information provided here. Good start for kids.
